KAPONGA QUEEN CARNIVAL.
SPORTS CANDIDATE. Approximately eighty residents of the Kaponga district were in attendance at the house party tendered in aid of Kaponga sports queen candidate Miss M. Crowley, by Mr. and Mrs'j. J. Kissick at their residence on Monday evening. The party was announced as the concluding one in support of the candidate, and a programme befitting the occasion was arranged, entertainment being catered for’ in games, competitions, and concert items. A euchre tournament attracted the majority of the guests as players, the lady’s prize being won by Miss Manton, and the gentleman’s by Mr. G. Paterson. As the winner of the gold medal awarded to the successful gentleman player in the mixed doubles tennis tournament held on the occasion of the recent garden fete, Mr. J. Lennane was presented with the trophy by Mr. Kissick, who extended suitable congratulations. Another popular presentation took place when, the secretary, Mr. D. P. F. Malone, handed a liaadsome leather handbag to Mrs. J. Harper, as a token of the committee’s appreciation of her assistance throughout the campaign. An excellent supper was served, and the successful gathering, which gave an appropriate termination to the series of, similar _ functions, dispersed shortly after midnight. CITY CANDIDATE. Despite the unfavourable weather on Friday evening a large gathering assembled at the house party given at her residence by Mrs. K. Barleyman in support of the city queen candidate, Miss N. Bolger. The evening was occupied with an appreciated programme of competitions and games, concluding with a euchre tournament, in which the lady’s and gentleman’s prizes were won respectively by Mrs. A. Melville and Mr. J. C. Bello we. On the finish of the tournament supper was served, after which pleasure was afforded in various items of entertainment. which sustained interest until the conclusion of the programme at a late hour. I During this week the Kapuni hall will be the scene of a big effort on behalf of the city queen candidate. Kapuni residents, including some of the railwaymen, whose social functions have achieved much success this season, are organising the event on an extensive scale, the principal feature being a tug-of-war tournament. The preliminary pulls are set down for Thursday, and on Saturday the finals will be followed by a dance. The enthusiasm shown by the railwaymen in the project should ensure big entries, and many exciting contests may he expected. Goods stalls and amusements of various kinds are being arranged for, and competitions in Highland and national dancing, with gold medal awards, are being organised. Every endeavour is being made to make the effort one of the most entertaining of the carnival events, and both evenings may he depended upon to afford much interest. CARNIVAL FINALE. A two-days bazaar, opening on Thursday, October 23, is announced as the carnival grand finale, though the total results and the exact number of votes polled for each of the three queen candidates AviU not be available until the final receipts from art unions, to be drawn on November 21, are known. Various stalls, novelty attractions, games, etc., are to be arranged at the bazaar, and competitions in 'dancing, singing, elocutionary and instrumental items, to be contested by the candidates’ representatives, are being organised. A notable feature "will be the tug-of-war tournament, in which liberal prize-money is offered. The recent revival of this sport throughout the district is attracting many good teams, some of the best of which it is anticipated will be seen in action in this contest
