DURHAM-SUNDERLAND MATCH. KEEN STRUGGLE PROBABLE. (By “Spectator.”) It would appear, as suggested in the ktar yesterday, that the match with Cheshire was more even than was expected and than the score would indicate. Erom now on, with a few exceptions, reports of the form shown last season would lead to the probability of a series of hard matches, in which the team will need to show their best form and probably, in the. northern district and Irish matches, the forward contests will be very hard. ' If this proves correct the hacks will be severely - tested, for they will probably have more defensive work to do and also get fewer opportunities for offensive work. However, it is impossible to.-speak with certainty, and one can only hope that the whole team, and especially the best men, those on whom the play-pivots, so to speak, keep fit and'well. The cabled message from the captain will be very reassuring to .everyone who follows the tour closely, and this probably includes the very large majority, of people all over the Dominion.;. Of one thing we may he certain, that the team which beats them will have to play good football, and the sporting spirit is to wish to see gopd, clean football on both sides, and if the opposing team is better then New Zealand will accept the result. The report of to-morrow’s the whole succeeding series will be looked for. with very keen anticipation.
