IN BLACKS’ CAMP
WHITE WOMEN. j LADY MISSIONARIES. MAWSON THEORY EXPLODED. t BY CaBLE-tress ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 14, 10.55 a.m. MELBOURNE!, Oct. 14. Senator Pearce says he is-, satisfied that the reports to the effect that two white women, are held captive by blacks m the Gulf of Carpentaria territory have been proved to be untrue'. ' „ So far as he can see at present no further action is necessary, although he is awaiting receipt of full details from the Huddersfield expedition. All reports seem to have originated from Dr. Wade’s black boy Sambo. The theory is that the stories were due to the presence in the district of two lady missionaries, one of whom had witn her a half-caste child for whom she was caring. They had visited the aborigines’ camps. Probably attempts were made to tell of these white women’s visits, and had given rise to the alarming rumours.
