SMART WORK IN HAWERA. Despite the inclement weather on Saturday afternoon a number of spectators watched a one-man coupling competition conducted by the Hawera Fire Brigade, Fireman P. Osborne), which cup has to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals before it becomes the winner’s property. Fireman J. Zinsli, whose time was 41see, came second, and won another gold medal presented by the Mayor; and Foreman H. Hurley and Fireman E. A. Hart, whose time was 49 4-ssee, tied for third place, but in the run-off Foreman Hurley’s time was 47sec, and he therefore secured the third prize of 15s, donated by a member of the brigade. Superintendent Morrison thanked his Worship for attending the competition and presenting the prizes, and for the encouraging: remarks made to the competitors. He also thanked the donors of the various prizes and the gentlemen who so kindly came and assisted as officials, viz..—Messrs M. F. Purser. W. Davy. W. A. Spragg. timekeepers; Caotain White (Manaia Fire Brigade), judge; Fireman J. Champion, secretary and examiner: and Mr Revnolds. starter.
