ROAD THREATENED.

BY WHENUAKURA RIVER. - HUGE LANDSLIDE PROBABLE. A further report on the precarious position of 11 chains of the WhenuaKura Valley Road, brought about, by the action of the Whenuakuia river, was made at the,meeting of the Eltham County Council on Saturdav by Cr. Me William. Cr. McWilliam said that in the particular part of the river referred to the current beat in against the bank just below the road, and as there appeared to be no solid foundation to the soil in the threatened locality a huge landslide, involving about* 11 chains of the roaa and about four acres of land/seemed to be inevitable. Together with the county' overseer (Mr. Muggeridge) he had made a further examination, but the remedy seemed to involve such a big piece of work, and then there was no guarantee that it would he effective, that he thought it best to do "nothing m the meantime, but wait and see how- it behaved. He doubted very' much whether willows would hold. 5 The chairman, Cr. C. J. Belcher, suggested that the difficulty might be overcome if they could get a year’s growth of willows established* just above the spo£ where the current Wat in. He thought that if this could be done they coufd build on to it year by year until the whole bank was made solid. ; . Councillors thought that this, course could be adopted, and the matter was subsequently left in the hands :of the overseer and Cr. McWilliam. ;
