SETTLERS PENALISED.
V A SURPRISING DISCOVERY. STRONG COAIAIENT AT ELTHAAI. A discovery which caused some strong comment yas made at a meeting of the Eltham County Council on Saturday, after tenders for the carting of toad metal had been considered. The chairman, Cr. C. J. Belcher, said that the tenders showed that contractors were adding an extra 6d per cubic yard to the price at whiyh they would tender under ordinary circumstances, evidently in order to meet a charge which the Eltham Borough Council was making for the use of their roads. Councillors were agreed that they c-ould not see what right the Borough Council had to make such a charge, and the chairman pointed out that it was penalising the back country settlers. who had to have their metal carted out to them. He said that in connection with the contract for carting metal out to Tirimoana an extra 6d per yard meant an additional cost to the settlors of £57 10s. “We- will have to put ■ a brick wall round tlie borough,” said the chairman.
