stayer good enough to win a Derby, for he is a half-brother to that good horse Radnor. The fact that Nincompoop and Chignon leave for Wellington on Sunday without Gloaming points to the lastnamed going to Melbourne to help at the Victorian Racing Club’s carnival. Oil inquiry at the Brougham private hospital as to Trainer O. Cox’s condition after his recent operation, the writer was informed that the patient is getting on well. What a great crowning effort to the marvellous career of Trainer R. J.. Mason and his wonderful gelding Gleaming this present Australian Joekev Club’s cairnival has been, but it is nc more than this pair of wonders deserve. . It is an old saying that nothing succeeds 1 ike success, and in the case ol Jockey G. Young it oiice again hat come true. Looked on as only a moderately good nder. Young has suddenly excelled himself since arriving in Australia, and in large and representative fields, in which he has been opposed by the best riders and horses in Australia, Young has ridden eleven yvinners—a fine record. The well-bred Snatcher (King Mark — Hoy) has been sold out of W. Pine’s stable, and in future will receive his education at the hands of A. J. Shearsby at Palmerston North. On odd occasions Snatcher showed promising form, but taken on the yvhole, he dio not do justice to his relations cr fulfi. his early promise. The Napier Park Racing Club recorded a loss of £492 for last year’s racing. The loss made by the same body the previous year was the bic sum of £1499. These figures would suggest that it is well nigh impossible for some clubs to carry on under the present rule of oppression, yet there is a great demand for any additional permits that may be offering. There will be three race meetings in the Dominion next week. The Carterton Racing Club hold their meeting on Saturday next, the Whangarei Racing Club are racing oh Thursday and Saturday, while Oamaru hold their spring meeting on Friday and Saturday. One of the most popular country meetings held in this Dominion is the (iCi<: meeting of the Waverley Racing Club. The club is evidently bent on keeping . up this reputation, • foi they are offering a most attractive, programme .for their coming meeting, to be held on October 27. As there are special conditions attached to the penalty- clause of this year’s New Zealand Cup, inasmuch as. no horse handicapped at less than weight for age shall carry oyer such irrespective, of amount won. For instance, a 4-year-ol.d handicapped at .8.9 would have to carry 9st. should he win a £3OO race. Yet- Gold Light, who won £I2OO by her victory in the Avondale Cup, will only have to put up a.i. additional pound penalty, as she'was handicapped at 8.8, or Ilb less than weight for age. Last May that promising hurdler Eerie went sore, and a- spell was decided on, but the chestnut daughter of Nassau was recently taken up again by Trainer E. J. Murtagh. What wonderful prize money the Australian Jockey Club and Victoria Racing Club are offering. As an instance of this one may quote the rich Metropolitan Handicap of £BOOO, given by the former club, but this is easily eclipsed by the Victorian Racing Club for this year’s'Melbourne Cup, the prize money offering by the latter club bing no. less Than £IO,OOO, added to which there is a sweepstake of £75 for starters, and the owner of the vanning horse gets a cup valued at £2OO.

In my notes of last -Saturday 7 ' 1 stated that I was not prepared to. admit that Heroic was master of Gloaming at weight for age until lie had mei the son of The Welkin in the Craven Plate. After reading of Gloaming’:success in the Spring Stakes, I felt inore than ever confident that the old fellow would retrieve himself, like he had always done. But the fates were against a meeting, and one has consolation in knowing that Gloaming made Ballymena, David and Nigger Minstrel look like “farmers’ platers.” Of course, one can do what one likes with one’s own, but a sporting spirit demanded that Heroic should start in the Graven Plate, for such races are especially put on programmes in the interests ol owners lucky enough to own a colt like Heroic. The easy manner in which the New Zealand 2-year-olds Nincompoop and Chignon disposed of a big crowd of Australian-bred youngsters in those rich races, the Breeders’ Plate and Gimerack, Stakes, suggests that Air Greenwood will, win a lot of money with ibis pair unless the accident to Nincompoop is serious. While the Gis-borne-owned Antoine .may he geed, one may expect either of the pair named to prove his superior. Considering that The Monk and Purser, which ran in the same interests a* Heroic, were at Randwick, it certainly looks as if Gloaming was “side-stepped” by the owners of Heroic in the popular Craven Plate. Only a few days ago the admirers of Heroic were telling us how confident the Australians were that their colt would win, and that the owner of Heroic won a fortune ove.r the result of the Chelmsford Stakes. All one can say to this is that Air Corteen must be a very brave backer, as one to risk a fortune by backing a horse tobe at Gloaming is simply looking for trouble, and in the past Gloaming has always proved _ his superiority over horses that may have had the luck to beat him. Inverting again to the Craven Plate, this race has long beer: looked on as the “champion race,” and as the prize attached to the event is no less than £3OOO, it seems passing strange that the Heroic people did net start their colt hist to prove that their solid hacking of him in the Chelmsford Stakes was well founded, for after the exhibition Gloaming made of David (the '•mining of which was so fine in the .Metropolitan Handicap as to suggest that lie was as good as ever), Ballymena and Rivoli, plenty of money could have again been placed at fair odds on Heroic, if his party thought him capable of again downing the old champion. But Trainer Godby is a good judge, and.did not like to advise the risk of a beating after winning the Chelmsford Stakes.
