MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
WEEKLY SITTING. BREACHES OF BY-LAW. A number of offenders against the borough by-laws were fined by Air. J. S. Barton, S.M., at Hawera to-day;' NO LIGHTS. No lights on his car was the reason for the police proceeding against Thomas Winter. Constable .Lemm, in giving evidence, said that defendant had given the excuse that his lights had failed him at about 6 p.m. when he was coming into. town. The Magistrate held that by driving his car without a light defendant had adopted a dangerous course. A fine of £3 and 7s court costs was imposed. DEFENCE CASES. There were two charges against vonths who had failed to legister under the Defence Act. The first, Francis H. Carpenter, was a resident in the non-effective area, but as that did not free him from the obligation to register, and as he bad nut the police to expense in locating him. he was fined 10s and 7s court costs. Although medically unfit, Arthur Harvey was under the .same obligation, and in view of the expense which lie bad put the authorities to he was also fined 10s and 7s court costs. WIT HO FT REAR LIGHTS. D.iving a car without a rear light was the charge pie ferret! against Win. A. D. Adams. A letter freon the defendant was before tiie court in which he stated that bis rear light had been burning - and ,a bump must have put it out. - The borough inspector said that when he stopped defendant he felt the lamp and it was warm. The explanation was unite feasible. On a similar charge A. W. SkjcHerup pleaded “not guilty.’’ The borough inspector stated in evidence that cm the 27th of last month he was standing on the corner of Wilson Street and Glover Road when-de-fendant drove past without a tail light. About a cjuarter of an hour I ate r be was in town, and on inspecting Skjellerup’s car be found that the light went off and on when it was given a iar. Defendant, who agreed that bis light had been defective in the manner described by the inspector, was fined 12s 6d and 7s court costs.
