THE MELBOURNE CUP. RIVOLI WITHDRAWN. BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct 9, 8.55 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 9. There is much disappointment that the champion Rivoli will not take further part in the Randwick meeting or start in, the Melbourne Cup, for which he was much fancied. Rivoli’s Spring Stakes running disclosed that the horse is out of form, and that preparation for the Victorian engagement would probably result in a complete breakdown. The owner, Barnes, thereupon decided to retire him from racing and send the animal to the stud.
Rivoli’s turf winnings totalled £IB,OOO.
