OBITUARY.
MB,. EDWARD NEWING. One of the oldest and most respected of the early settlers on the Plains passed away at Wanganui yesterday in the person of Mr. Edward Newing. Mr. Newing came out to New Zealand from England in 1860, arid saw much service in the troublesome- times of the Maori War. He next took up farming on the No. 2 Line until 1881, when lie went to the Manaia Road, Manaia. He was farming there for about twenty years, and was chairman of directors of the original Manaia dairy factory. Mr. Newing farmed there for many years until, about fifteen years since, when he gave up farming and retired from active life to live in Hawera. Some years, ago he went to Wanganui and lived on St. John’s Hill until his death: Until meeting with an accident some months ago he had enjoyed good Health. A man of sterling character. gifted with a quiet but attractive personality, he had endeared himself: to a. host of friends, who will learn with deep regret- Of his death, though he had lived far beyond the allotted span. His wife predeceased him about eight years, and there are left to mourn his'loss a family of one son, Mr. R,. Newing (New Plymouth) and six daughters—Mrs. Beard. Miss Newing. Mrs. Si Lock (all of Waimanui), Mrs. D. Mitr-hell (Manaia). Mrs. W. Storldart (Waimikurau), Mrs. W. A. Duckworth (Hawera) and Mrs. Sutherland (Auckland).
