MATERNITY BONUS.
—-- DEBAUCHES THE PEOPLE. DR. VAI,INTINE’S OPPOSITION. (BY TELEGRAPH— PfIKSS ASSOCIATION. ) WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. A motion urging the- Health Department to consider the question of prqviding maternity nurses for all confinements was carried to-day .at the Hospital Conference. The matter was introduced by a remit urging the Government to' grant a maternity bonus to all cases who enter public hospital maternity wards. During the discussion Dr. Yalintine said “God forbid that we should ever hav,e a bonus such as is given in New South Wales. They have givep away £750.000 in maternity bonuses, and in the words of a New South Wales official they have absolutely debauched the people. ”• He thought they ought to make maternity as cheap as possible, but at the moment lie was net sure how it could be done. He sincerely hoped they would not ask for any scheme siicli as that in vogue in New South Wales. In his opinion the best way to lielii mothers was to have doctors and trained nurses available at very reasonable cost. They should have trained maternity nurses right throughout all districts.
