Mr Mason has i fears he has slipped a muscle in the forearm or shoulder, hut so far the 'real, seat of the trouble has not been ascertained. NQTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas.) A fine upstanding gelding in Black Rock ran two good races at Marton and Rangitikei Hunt Club meetings, and if he has gone on the right way Black Rock should show up at the Masterton meeting. Out of over 700 nominations for the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby the huge prize (£BOOO and a sweepstake that should raise the prize to £IO,OOO at least) only induced eight owners to run their horses. Last season Bonideer showed a lot of pace over a short course, and as she has had the advantage of a couple of races this season, she may show some of her last season’s form in the Electric Hack at the Masterton meeting on Friday next. As Mu site toon has won £590 since the declaration of the New Zealand Cup weights, lie has incurred a Tib penalty for the big two-mile race. There is no, doubt that the imported horse is a good one, but would be a risky proposition for ante-post bettors to touch.

A number of promising three-year-olds are engaged in the Dunedin Guineas, which event is decided on Saturday. Should H. Gray ride Starmist or the stable-mate Footfall they will run well, for each showed by their running at the recent Ashburton meeting that they have made the age improvement.

Considering the prize money offering and tile approach of the more important spring meetings, the Masterton Racing Cluh received splendid acceptances lor the first day of their meeting. which Opens on Friday next and concludes on Saturday.

"When lie likes Tanadees can gallAp, and as the Australian-hred three-year-old is well seasoned haekers will no douht support him in the chief race at Masterton. It has been stated that Tanadoes has earned a 51b penalty for the New Zealand Cup. hut this is incorrect, although should Tanadees win the Masterton Cup he will incur a 51b penalty for the big southern handicap. Pent Etre ran well on bo.th days of the late Wanganui meeting, and a reproduction of this form would make the filly a dangerous opponent on either dav of the Masterton meeting. The spring meeting of the Dunedin .Jockey Cluh opens to-morrow (Thursday; and concludes on Saturday.

Although not a first-class hurdler. Le Forte is capable of holding his own in company such as he will meet at the Dunedin meeting. On form he is well in. Prior to going to the Ashburton meeting Tiff was doing better work than Limelight, and track watchers thought the brother to Snub a certainty in the Ashburton Cup, but in that event Tiff got no assistance from nis rider. If able to produce private form to-morrow Tiff wifi he one of the prominent ones in the chief race at Dunedin to-morrow. Carrying 51b above the minimum in the six furlong handicap on the opening day at Ashburton, Retrospect ran Lava to a short half length, and this after running very wide at the turn and thereby losing a couple of lengths. Retiospeet was not produced on the second day, but will be on hand at Dunedm to-morrow, where she has an engagement in the Trial Stakes. If as well as when at Ashburton, Retrospect votifil appear well nigh a certaintv. Gay Queen appears to be her most dangerous opponent. Wiiikie’s Best won most decisively at the Ashburton meeting, and is a most promising “hack.'’ Those who should know say he is capable of running . four furlongs under 50sec any morning. As he has got off with onlv /IP above the minimum in the Taioma Hack to-morrow, he will certainly give his opponents plenty of bother. ‘When well seasoned Winkie’s Best may prove a fair performer.
