AFTER FOURTEEN YEARS.

ARREST ON FORGERY CHARGE. Two brothers who are alleged to have been parties in a- case of fox-gery 14 years ago appeared in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court last week. Before Air Wyvern Wilson, S.M., Herbert William Grainger, aged 31, and George Arthur Grainger, aged 34, appeared on the charge of, having on January do, 1910, at Christchurch, together with Malcolm Dane Howarth, forged the name of W. Howarth to an authority to. withdraw the sum of £lls from the Post Office Savings Bank in Christchurch, causing Sydney Pope Stevens to act on the authority as if it were genuine. Chief Detective Gibson asked for a remand till October 10, stating that he did not know at present just what was- to be done in the case (reports the Lyttelton Times). The Magistrate-. “Is the informant available?” The Chief Detective: ‘‘Yes.” The remand was granted, and bail was allowed in the sum of £l-00, and oim surety of £IOO. The Younger of the brothers asked for an order suppressing his name from publication. The Ala-gistra-te: “Wlrv should it be kept- out?” The accused: “I was only very .’cung, sir, when it was done. It was 14 years ago.” The other accused: “I was only a lad when it happened. Now lam a married man with four children.” Tire accused stated that both had four years’ war service. The Chief Detective stated that the accused were aged 20 and 16 respectively, at the time, and the other hoy was 14. The Magistrate said lie would not make an order in the meantime.
