FAT IN THE FIRE
ALLEGED CORRUPTION. SCANDAL IN SYDNEY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 8, 11.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 8. Recently a citizen named Cropley made a charge that he was approached by .two persons who informed him that tlie City Council would pay him £14,000 as compensation for tlie surrender of his leases of certain city buildings if lie paid £IOOO, which, it was stated, was to be passed on to certain individuals; secondly, that £SOO would not be accepted, as there were too many among whom the money was to be distributed; thirdly, if he did not pay £IOOO, he would be granted £12,000 as compensation and not a penny more. Cropley further stated that he refused to pass on £IOOO as requested, and that tlie Council passed a vote to sell at £12,000 as compensation, which lie declined to accept. The State Cabinet has now taken tlie matter up and lias decided to appoint a Royal Commission to investigate the civil administration on condition that Cropley will reiterate to the Government the allegation that the corrupt offer was made to him by two persons.
