The Rev. A. J. Seamer and Maori partly left Hawera by motor on Tuesday for Stratford and the north.

Mrs Bert, Smith, of Hawera, has been appointed minute secretary at the Methodist Women’s Missionary Conference, now sitting at Hastings. The Rev. E. Palgrave Davy has been invited to take charge of church work at Mussori, India, next year,, but at present finds that he will not he able to visit India for at least another twelve months.

A London cable announces the death of Sir Robert Henderson, who was director of the New Zealand medical services during the war.

The Governor-General and Ladv Jellicoe arrived at Invercargill last'night, being formally welcomed by the Mayor and councillors. They remain till Friday, and .during their stay hi s Excellency will be the guest at numerous local functions.

Mr. W. H. L. Roberts, postmaster at Kaponga, who has been absent on his annual leave, returned to Kaponga last evening, accompanied by Mrs. Roberts. Mr. Roberts resumed duty last night. The relieving postmaster, Mr. F. J. Shearer, returned to New Plymouth this morning. Mr. H. C. H.‘ Hutton, organist and choirmaster at the Hawera Methodist Church, has received notification that he has been appointed , to. a similar position at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Auckland. Mr. Hutton expects to take over his new duties early in- November. The death has taken place in Auckland of a pioneer in Mrs. Bridget Long, who, with her husband and family, came to New Zealand in 1879. in the ship Fernglen, which was commanded by Captain W. Frater, who died only recently at a great age. One of the oldest residents of Gisborne, Mr. James East, who was in business there for half a century, died on October 1. Mr. East was a native of Calstoek, in Cornwall, and came out to Gisborne in 1873, and after working in the business of the late Mr. William Graham, sei up for himself in Gladstone Road on what became known as “East’s Corner,” where he remained for 40 years. He was associated with every philanthropic movement in Gisborne, also with many musical societies. Mr. East leaves three sons — Messrs Sidney East, of Auckland; Charles East, of Palmerston Noi’th; and Alfred East, 8.A., of the Hampden Street school, Nelson. At the advanced age of 86 years a highly respected resident .of both Auckland and New Plymouth, Mrs. Elizabeth Cherry, died at Epsom on Monday. Mrs. Cherry was the wife of Mr. Francis Cherry, a well-known surveyor in years gone by. At the age of four years she was brought by her parents in the ship Blenheim to New Plymouth. She was born at St. Mary’s, Scilly Isles, in November, 1838,. and it was in 1842 that the family settled in New Plymouth. Some years later they removed to Auckland, whe};e she was married to Mr. Francis Cherry. She and her husband returned to New Plymouth, where they Jived during the days of the Maori war. After the conclusion of hostilities Mr. and Mrs. Cherry returned to Auckland, where both resided until death ended their careers.
