ROMANCE OF A FORTUNE.
A CLERK’S MISTAKE. MAKES ROWETT RICH. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 7, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Oct, 6. The newspaper The Peojde reveals that Rowett’s fortune .was founded on the mistake of a clerk, who, on the eve of the war, misinterpreted Rowett’s order for six casks of foreign rum and shipped six cargoes. Before Rowett discovered the mistake war was declared, and he was the only man in a position to meet the army’s sudden huge demands. He secured contracts at his own figure. [Rowett, whose suicide was reported last week, consequent .upon financial worries, financed the Shackleton expedition to the Polar regions.]
