The Masterton Racing Club will hold their spring meeting on Saturday of next week. The Dunedin Jockey. Club will hold their meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. As a number of the New Zealand Cup candidates will race there, and the southern three-year-olds will meet in the Dunedin Guineas, the gathering should excite interest. The death of Mr. W. C. Adamson removes one of the pillars of racing, as far as Taranaki is concerned. A great worker for the Egmont Racing Club, of which he was a member for over 34 years, he will be much missed from the club’s meetings. The well-known horse trainer Mr. O. Cox is at present in Wellington, and has undergone a severe operation at a private hospital. With his many friends the writer wishes the popular and successful trainer speedy recovery. Although Sunshot .came to hand quickly, and won like a promising gelding at the Taranaki Hunt Club and Wanganui meetings, it has been decided to spell the son of Boniform, so Sunshot will now' be off the scene till the end of November or beginning of December. Sunshot will make his next appearance at the AshhuYst or Feeding meeting. Like his stablemate Sunshot, Te Kawa is on the easy list, and will not be asked to race for another couple of months. Te Kawa has been tried over sheep hurdles, and later in the season it is possible that Maniapoto’s son will appear in a hack hurdle race. In general conformation Te Kawa i,s’ the beau ideal of a hurdler. That “classic” form cannot be very high in this Dominion, so far this season, is shown by the fact that a maiden hack was '.successful in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. In the Avondale Guineas, too, a couple of hacks in Master Doon and Lady Rewa. tilled the minor places. As a rule a good three-year-old can hold its own with the very best of other ages when they, meet under weight-for-age conditions. Indeed, several that have met'defeat in hack company this season have shown up well in our Guineas races. As proof of this one may mention Ilka’s second at Wanganui, Master Doom's aiid Lady 'Rewa’s second and third respectively at Avondale, and now Mount Marta and Lady Joyce filling first and second places in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, which makes one doubt the quality ot .the present three-year-olds. The progeny of Absurd filled the lirsf three positions in the two-year-old race at Hastings on Wednesday last. Shirley, the filly that won the juvenile race at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, claims Absurd —Hoy as her parentage therefore she is half-sister to that'once brilliant galloper Anomaly. The Ha-wera-owned Snatcher is also a halfbrother to Shirley. In my last notes (written before the Hawke’s Bay meeting) if was remarked that the Anstralian-bred Tanadees was on the improve and showed distinct signs of running a distance of ground well—in fact, was a possibility for Derby honours. The running of Tanadees at the Hawke’s Bay meeting strengthens this view, for at Hastings the son of Roseworthy showed such courage and gameness as played a part in his win. In the Auckland Cup of 1920 StarI land beat First Salute.by a head over the two-mile journey, and three weeks later Maioha won the Wellington Cup by a nose from Eleus, with First Salute another nose away. First Salute soon afterwards went amiss, and was considered untrainable. First Salute was then acquired by Mr. H. Neag|e, who bad practically performed a miracle. in patching Bon Reve up, and afterwards winning a. small fortune with that gelding. In a lesser degree Mr. Neagle has worked a similar feat with First Salute, for after winning middle distance races with the .son of Marble Arch in the autumn, Mr. Neagl© lias'startled the natives by beating Wassail and Civilrorm, two good sprinters over a. six-furlong course with the aid of this once great stayer and afterwards broken-down gelding. Certainly the feat is rarely equalled. It is nothing short, of extraordinary iiow writers become dramatic over the success of their idol in any sphere of art or sport, using- terms and comparisons that are wholly out of place. I was prompted to pen "this on reading a Sydney writer’s account of Heroic’s victory over the aged Gloaming in the recently run Chelmsford Stakes. After stating that Heroic secured a very lucky run on the rails to win by a small margin, the Sydney scribe waxes enthusiastic about the three-year-old’s performance, describing him as a phenomenon. He then goes a step further and describes Heroic as the “horse of the century.” Could anything be mote absurd? While admitting that Heroic is undoubtedly a promising colt, his victory over Gloaming and Ballymena (with lots of help from, at least one rider on an opposition horse) does not entitle anyone to call the Australian colt the horse of the century, for on all sides it is admitted that the nine-year-old Gloaming is not the performer he was two, three, four, five, or even six seasons ago. This is proved by Ballymena defeating Gloaming over a. mile course a week later, for good as ■ Ballymena, is over a middle or long distance, hi.s most ardent admirer (and ! I am one) would not class him with Gloaming of old over a mile course. Then why make Heroin's performance appear such a mighty one? Although Heroic beat Gloaming over the nine . furlongs of the Chelmsford Stakes, we i may still find' that the incomparable ' son of The Welkin is a match for all ■ up to ten furlongs. This tost will " come in the Craven Plate next week.
