FALSE DECLARATION. MONEY-LENDER FINED £250; SYDNEY, Sept. 17. “One of the zz-orst eases of usury that has ever come before the courts.” It zvas in this zvay .that Mr. W Dovey, zvho zzas instructed by the Ciozvn Solicitor for the prosecution, referred to a case zvhich came before the Central Police Coui-t yesterday. Joseph Marks, a butcher at Campbell town, zvas charged on the information of H. F. G. Roy, an officer of the Repatriation Department, zvith obtaining soldier pension instalments by means of a false declaration.’ Defendant, who pleaded guilty, zvas said to have made a statutory declaration that he was not receiving the instalments in payment of any advance or loan to the pensions. There were five separate charges in respect of money advances to Sarah ■Tone Carnies, Arthur C. Kenny. Ernest Carnies, Charles William Watsford, and William Crazvford. Mr. Dovey said defendant had made a practice of lending money to disabled returned soldiers and pensioners on their pension certificates. Defendant zz r as fined £SO in respect of each of the five cases, together with £l4 9s costs. w
