PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.

TEACHING OF SWIMMING. (By Telegraph—Special to Star.) • . WELLINGTON,,. Oct. 3.' The Minister of Internal Affairs has informed Christchurch members that Cabinet has agreed to increase, the grant to the New Zealand ' Amateur Swimming Association from £loo' to £2OO for the purpose of encouraging the teaching of swimming at schools. BIG STATE LOANS, . •During the discussion on the Mortgages Final Extension Bill amendments by the Legislative Council, Mr Lysnar remarked that •. the ■ most important difficulty was not the date of the final extension, but the lack of money to lend. The Public Trustee had announced that his office was committed for 12 months, and he believed the State Advances Department was even worse off. ' The Premier immediately contradicted this statement. He had, he said, received information that the State Advances Department had, granted loan authorisations totalling £646,000, all of which came out of the capital recently borrowed for settlers only. Those who needed loans to meet their liabilities at the end of the moratorium period were receiving special attention. “NOTHING OF THE SORT.” Parliament was amused by the promptitude, and vigour of the Prime Minister in answering a question from Mr Masters (Stratford) as follows: ‘Whether, having regard to the fact that a large number of people on the land are threatened with financial disaster if a deadlock occurs between the two Houses respecting the Mortgages Final Extension Bill, and seeing that the Prime Minister has stated that he has in no way influenced the action of another place in nullifying the wishes the will of the rer»resentatives of the people in regard to that measure, will the Prime Minister undertake in the event of a deadlock to appoint to the Legislative Council sufficient members to ensure the passage of the measure desired by this House before the present session comes to an end.” ‘‘l will' do nothing of the sort,” said the Premier, with a very emphatic gesture and in loud tones.
