IMMIGRATION ISSUE. CANADA’S POSITION. BY CABLE PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPY RIG Ul M . OTTAWA, Oct. 2. itfi tlie Japanese immigration to the it out of the League ot Nations, Canadian interests in the issue raised by Japan is heightened by the negotiations between the Canadian and Japanese Governments regarding the interpretation of the ”gentlemen’s agreement,” which now regulates the immigration of domestic servants and labourers to 150 annually, but, in addition, other classes, including Government representatives, merchants, students. also the. wives and children of Japanese already resident in Canada are allaw’ed entry. ’ The regulation of immigration of wives and children has led to a .'renewal of negotiations with Japan, as British Columbian members of Parliament last session expressed a doubt as to the sufficiency of the protection afforded by tlie gentlemen’s agreement, and the Premier (Mr McKenzie King) agreed that there was a loophole in the agreement, and he undertook to negotiate with Japan with respect to the immigration of wives.
The Toronto Star says, editorially: “A cable from London 'says that Britain may reject the League plan as amended at Japan’s suggestion, but that if one member of the League can do so another can. Canada, as a member of the. League, will probably reject the plan, even if Britain fails to do so. Canada could never permit British Columbia to he coerced by Geneva into admitting oriental immigration against her will.”
