New Zealanders won all the prizes in the cheese guessing competition. Mrs Rein, the wife of an official in charge of the Samoan exhibit, guessed the correct weight, 18931 b; Mr Smith, of Hawke’s Bay, second; and Mr A. Tilbrook, engineer in charge of the refrigerating chamber in the New Zealand pavilion, third. They agreed to forego the prizes in order that they might be awarded to the English competitors.—Sun Cable. GANDHI FASTING. DELHI, October 2. Gandhi was very weak, bu.t cheerful, on the fifteenth day of his fast. BELGIAN RECONSTRUCTION. BRUSSELS, Oct. 2. The Minister for Reconstruction states that, out of 1175 public buildings destroyed in Belgium during the w r ar, IU4O have been reconstructed, including 350 schools and 234 churches, while; 93,000 houses have been rebuilt out of 100,000 destroyed. EMPIRE M.P.S’ TOUR. CAPETOWN, Oct. 2. The Einpire Parliamentary party arrived at Salisbury and were cordially welcomed by the Premier, the Mayor and other prominent persons.. The visit synchronised with the first anniversary of • the grant of responsible government to the colony. A meeting is being held with members of the Cabinet with the object of forming a Southern Rhodesian branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association. Last night the delegates dined with the Governor, after which a largely attended and brilliant reception was held. INCOGNITI CkICKETERS.. ! NEW YORK, Oct. 2. The Incogniti cricketers’ match against Germantown was drawn. The Incogniti lost seven wickets • for 143 runs and declared. Germantown made 125 and lost six wickets for 7G. FINANCIER’S SUICIDE. LONDON, Oct. 2. : Mr Rowatt, who financed the last Shackle ton expedition, was found hanged in his residence in London. According to papers, Mr Rowatt lost £15,000 over the Shackle-ton expedition. He was greatly affected by the death of Sir Ernest Shackleton. of whom he was a schoolfellow. The financial crash of'Sir John Stewart, the whisky distiller, who committed Suicide, is believed to have cost Mr Rowatt £IOO,000. EMPIRE DEVELOPMENT. LONDON, Oct, 2. Mr A. M. Phillips, a New Zealander, sneaking at the conference of the National Unionist Association at New-castle-on-Tyne concerning the association’s Empire development branch, said that a while ago it was suggested he should assemble a hand of Dominion workers to spread knowledge of the Empire throughout the electorate. He had been most successful throughout the country. He had been speaking at street corners, and now invited the local associations to ask for Dominion speakers and lecturers.
