U.S. PRESIDENCY.

VITUPERATIVE STAGE. N NOT YET REACHED. BY CABLE—FRESH ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, October 1. The various candidates in the Presidential campaign have now come to closer grips. ‘With the nearing of election day (November 4) everybody is concerned, from the candidates themselves to the aspirants for the various State ' Governorships, and prominent partisans have generally begun to launch attacks at each other. The vituperative stage has not vet been reached, the so-called mud-sling-mg, malicious rumours and bitter innuendoes being usually, reserved for the last week of the campaign. Senator Brookhart, who is ostensibly a Republican, has called upon Mr Dawes to resign,. declaring that lie is unfit for a Vice-Presidential, candidate, as being a reactionary. Mr Davis has begun a polite but cutting offensive against Senator Mellon, who is a prominent banker, declaring that the latter favours big business and a tariff that robs the people. Senator La Follette is demanding the public ownership of utilities and national resources, and he is answered bv Mr Hoover, who insists that the Government cannot go into business. President Coolidge, answering Senator La Follette’s pleas for curbing the power of the courts to declare acts of Congress unconstitutional, has broadcasted pleas over the .radio asking the people to “safeguard our institutions.” Meanwhile the authorities and the courts in Louisiana and California have forbidden the placing of La Follette’s party upon the ballots, owing to the various election law technicalities. This has raised a storm of protest, even President Coolidge publicly expressing dissatisfaction that this has been done. La Follette’s strength is notably increasing each day, and the candidates for various offices are undertaking terrific speaking campaigns.
