At the Lympne light aeroplane competitions, which were renewed in good weather, an interesting event was the difficult slow speed test over a straight course of 500 yards, 25 yards wide, which the competitors covered twice in each direction. In the single flight one machine crashed and another was forced to land. To-day’s record was achieved by Raynham, flying 39.4 miles an honr in a Sawker Sygnet one biplane. FRANCE AND GERMANY. PARIS, October 1. The Franco - German conference to negotiate a commercial agreement opened with conciliatory speeches by M. Herriot (Premier of France) and the German Ambassador (Herr von Hoeseh), after which the delegates had tea together. TRAINS COLLIDE. COLOGNE, October 1. Ten nersons were killed and thirtytwo injured in a railway tnnnel outside Mayence owing to a local train dashing into the rear of a Basle express, which had stopped in consequence of locomotive trouble. A fire followed the crash.
