Lieut. R, C. C. Steele, N.Z.S.C., area officer of the Hawera defence office and Adjutant of the Second Mouhted Rifles, has been appointed D.A.A.G. of the Central Command Palmerston North, vice Captain Goss Lieut. G. M. McCaskill, N.Z.S.C., at present assistant area officer Lower Hutt, will take Lieut. Steele’s place at Hawera. The death of the Rev. J. A. Hosking, Methodist minister at Otahuhu, aged 52, is announced in an. Auckland telegram. He entered the ministry in 1894, serving at Christchurch, Dannevirke and Eltham before going to Otahuhu two and a half years ago. His wife died a year ago. He leaves five children. At a gathering of commercial travellers in Palmerston North on Saturday, Mr. JT. Smart, who for 20 years has represented the Stewart Hardware Company on the road, and who is leaving to join the firm of his brothers in New Plymouth and Stratford, was the guest of honour. Mr. G. R. Flint, president of the local Commercial Travellers’ Association, in presenting Mr. Smart with a handsome ’ook and pocket wallet, and Mrs. Smart with a silver tea pot, voiced the * regret of thqir numberless friends at their departure and expressed the wish for their happiness in the future. >
