NEW ZEALAND FLOCKS.
HEAVY LOSSES IN SOUTH. (By Telegraph.— Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 30. enroot - i beeil an increase of 594,03/ in the number of sheep owned in New Zealand, despite heavy losses m some of the South Island counties last year. The figures are as follows: South Island 10,297.059 (increase 25,283), North Island 13,478,717 (increase 669,054), total for the Dominion 23.775,778, an increase of 694,337. Detailed figures show almost uniform increases in North Island counties, but there are notable decreases in parts of the South Island, these including Waimea 10,563, Malvern 6404, Levels 26.150, Waitaki 28,519, Maniototo 10,287, Wailiemo 8807, Bruce 18,927, Tuapelia 8914. The largest increase in the Dominion is in Ashburton (48,079), which brings its flocks to a total of 890,806. The flocks are distributed as follows : Auckland 1,968,115, Napier and Gisborne 6,277,917. Wellington and West Ooast 5',232,685, Marlborough, Nelson and Westland. 1,272,533, Canterbury and Kaikoura 4,711,095, Otago 4,313,431. WOOL COMMITTEE The Minister of Agriculture was asked by Mr. Forbes to-dav if a report in the Trade Journal that -the Wool Board,was to be constituted by statute was correct.
The Hon. Nosworthy’s answer was that he knew nothing about such legislation. The board he had mentioned was the reconstitution of the wool committee on similar lines to the former committee, whiph had arranged the offerings for auction. The authority quoted by Mr. Forbes was not always reliable.
