GLOAMING ‘NOT FOR MELBOURNE
BY CABLE—PK USB ASSOCIATION—COPY BIGHT SYDNEY. Sept. £29. Mr. Mason says the reason ; why Gloaming is not going to Melbourne is that the norse is getting old, and cannot stand so niuc-li knocking about as formerly. It would be asking ; too much of the old fellow to make the trip to Melbourne.
The Hawk left for Melbourne tonight to fulfil engagements there, including the October Stakes, Caulfield Stakes and Caulfield Cup. This means that he will not fill his Randwick engagements *in the Spring Stakes and Craven Plate. His previous successes in Melbourne, where the left hand running is apparently to his iiking, no doubt furnish the reason for his being sent south.

is ail improving sort, and may do well in minor handicaps on the flat, and later, may possibly develop into a.' firstclass hurdler.
Ballymena will oppqse Australia’s best stayers in. the Spring Stakes, and if forward enough to do himself justice over twelve furlongs, New Zealanders will have a worthy representative in Air. Knight’s gelding. It is possible that Gloaming vi!! be a runner for the Spring Stakes, and if sent to the post by Mason one can rely on The Welkin’s great son being the very hardest to beat, and if the pare is not too warm in the early stages he may even beat Ballymena over toe twelve furlong course. Many who do not know often refer to • Gloaming as a sprinter pure and simple. This, of course, is absurd. Certainly Mason, has never asked his champion to perform over a longer course than 14 miles, hut Gloaming has won so well over that distance that even a two-mile journey would have found Gloaming master ,of most horses he has met, for in all his races over twelve furlongs his opponents have been more tired than Gloaming, if we except one race. This was the Spring Stakes at Randwick, in which event the great horse Poitrel narrowly defeated the son of The Welkin, and I may add that Mason says to this day that over-confidence on Deeley’s part lost the race for Gloaming. As the performances of Gloaming over a mile and a. half course are not generally known, they may be interesting reading, and are as follow: Woh the A.J.C. Derby, in which he carried 8.7 and ran the niile and a half in 2.33*; won the New Zealand Derby, time 2.371; won Great .Northern Derby, time 2.34*. Gloaming only van once over the distance as a, four-year-old, the Spring Stakes, in which Poitrel beat him in 2.35. As a five-year-old Gloaming won the Auckland Plato, carrying 9.4, in 2.34*; and the following year he again won this event in the great time of 2.32*. ' On occasion;; jockeys act in an unaccountable manner when race riding, and at times oiie has witnessed an accomplished horseman do a silly act that an apprentice would not be guilty of in the first year of his apprenticeship. This statement is prompted through reading the account of the last race for the Chelmsford Stakes, a. race competed for by good horses, ridden by the best of riders. The account states that Ballymena was the leader entering the last furlong, but Gloaming immediately challenged him. Just at the critical moment Con Reed allowed Ballymena to leave the rails aud bore outwards on to Gloaming. This not only had a detrimental effect bn Gloaming, hut at the same time allowed Heroic, ridden by brother Ashley Reed, to get through on the rails and. win. Under normal conditions Ashley Reed took on a big risk”in remaining on the inner behind such great horses as Gloaming and Ballymena, which were ridden by good riders, and in 99 percent. of cases a rider like A. Reed would not wait for such an opening, and in the same percentage of cases would not get the opening •
