Mr. G. Baghy, the newly appointed manager of the Eltham gas works, has arrived and takes over his duties on Wednesday. Mr. H. G. McDonald has resigned his position on the Eltham Chamber of Gommerce. The death occurred at Master ton on Wednesday morning, of Mrs John Wingate, aged 82. Mrs Wingate, who was born at Perthshire, Scotland, was"married there, and came to New Zealand in 1865. She was a resident of the Wairarapa for 59 years, and made many friends by her kindly disposition, always' being willing to lend a helping hand to those requiring assistance. She was one of the sterling old pioneers who had to endure many hardships in the early days. There are many in Wellington who will learn with regret of the fatal motor accident in London which befell Captain Matthew Alexander West, of East Africa (eldest son of Mrs West and the late Matthew West, of Wellington). He was born in Wellington, and educated at the Wanganui Collegiate School. Captain West left New Zealand with the Sixth Contingent for South Africa, serving with the forces there till the end of the war. Taking up the study of law in the Transvaal, he practised his profession at Petersburg, North Transvaal, and in feuuth Rhodesia, as a partner in the legal firm of Coghlan and West. In 1913, when De Wet was causing trouble in South Africa, Captain West again took up arms, and fought throughout the rebellion. He later fought in German South-West Africa and German East Africa during the Great War, and on the cessation of hostilities he was appointed chief political officer at Dar-es-Salem, in the newly-acquired British territory. He leaves a widow and two children.
