CARE OF SOLDIERS’ GRAVES.

WORK IN HAWERA CEMETERY.

The care of returned soldiers’ and veterans’ graves is another of the many good works for which credit must be given to the Hawera Women’s National Reserve.

There are about 40 returned soldiers’ and veterans’ graves in the cemetery, and in order that none of them should present an uncared for appearance five groups of lady workers have been appointed, the first four groups taking their turn week by week in attending to weeding and placing flowers on the graves, and the fifth group taking its turn but not doing any weeding. The Reserve has been in communication with the relatives of the deceased soldiers, the Borough Council and the cemetery caretaker and have obtained the necessary permission to carry out the work, which’ also includes the erection of small white wooden crosses on the graves. The names of the ladies attending to the work are as follow:—Groun 1: Mesdames Rudgh and Frisk and Misses Clemoes. Rbbinson, Spurdle and New. Gi.nip 2: Misses Matheson, Brown, Wert, King, Parsons, Silson and Johnston. Group 3: Misses Lyle. Kirk, Herbert, Old, Stone and Eiiggs. Groun f: Misses Pedder. Holmes, E. and G. Rawcliffe, I), and H. Nairn, Jenkins and • Gunderson. Group o: Misses Williams, Bowen. Bailey (2), Brough, Foster (2) and Harley.

The secretary (Mrs. L. A. Taylor) states that she will be obliged if any other ladies willing to assist will get into communication with her.
