BRUTAL ATTACK.
YOUNG WOMAN STABBED
UNKNOWN. ASSAILANT ESCAPES
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 26. An assault of a desperate character, in circumstances which might easily have terminated in murder, Avas perpetrated last evening near one of the entrances to Albert Park. Miss Salek, a young woman, was brutally stabbed in the back with'a, knife or other sharp instrument by an unknown mail, who had apparently followed her from the locality of the public library. The assailant escaped.
The assaidt occurred shortly before 8 o’clock, while Miss Salek avjus on her way home through. Albert Park. It is reported that a- man followed hoi 1 from near the library. When Miss Salek reached the Princes street gate the man rushed upon her and stabbed her sa'vagely in the back betAveen the shoulders.
Her screams immediately brought two pedestrians to her assistance, but these did not have an opportunity to identify the culprit, Avho ran off quickly. The injury fortunately is not serious, although Miss Salek is suffering acutely .from shock.
