SKY-WRITING MYSTERY.
WHY; DID THE LETTERS CHANGE ) COLOUR?
It is estimated that nearly 5,000,000 people witnessed the six demonstrations of sky-writing when two aeroplanes, Piloted by Mr. Tait Cox and Mr. Bradley, wrote “Daily Mail” in flamecoloured smoke against the perfect blue sky over London. One aeroplane demonstrated above the East End of London and the East India Docks, and then proceeded to South London as far as Wellington. The second aeroplane sky-wrote over Putney and Richmond, and later gave an exhibition at Wembley, which was seen as far west as Southall and north at Watford. There was a mysterious effect in connection with the Wembley demonstration which even the sky-writer himself cannot account for. The letters as they were formed at a height of 12,000 ft. changed their colouring. The original fiery tint varied as it was produced and gave the hundreds of thousands of onlookers a surprising exhibition of scarlet, pink, orange, and terracotta lettering. These strange variations may be due to some unusual atmospheric condition arising out of the.heat-wave or to some subtle change in the chemical employed. The public Avatching the demonstration noticed that smoke-Avriting persisted in the heaA r en,s for considerably longer than usual.
