ARBITRATION COURT.

WATERSIDERS’ CLAIMS. LIGHTERING AT WANGANUI. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NAPIER, Sept. 25. A sitting of the Arbitration Court was held at Napier Jo-day to consider the claims of the Waterside Workers’ Federation in respect to lightering work at Napier, Wanganui, and Gisborne. They demanded twopence an hour extra for handling cargo in lighters in roadstead; threepence extra for handling frozen meat into or from barges; and fourpence extra for receiving coal into lighters. It was contended for the union that work on lighters was much harder than on overseas steamers. Mr W. G. Smith, for the employers, complained that it had taken 35 to 40 vears for the claims to materialise. Had there been any substance in the claims they would have been made long ago. Decision was reserved.
