ELTHAM FIRE BOARD.
SPECIAL MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent). A special meeting of the Fire Board was held in the Council Chamber yesterday afternoon. _ Present: Messrs Thomas (chair), Bridger, Honan, King, Jones and Stanners, with Superintendent Nuttall, the secretary, Air M. AVaters, and Inspector Hugo. On the motion of the chairman, a vote of condolence was passed to the widmv and relatives of the late Fireman Hart. On the; motion of Air Jones, the action of the local committee in purchasing a new Ford truck for a fire engine, complete with the latest type of body, was approved. The new r enginelvill be completed by the end of the month, and it was decided to purchase a new. spot light, a distinctive siren, and a plated radiator shell and lamp rims as extras. The secretary said that the estimates, amounting to £750, had been approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs. The Borough Council wrote, agreeing to the transfer of property on the conditions laid down by the Board. Inspector Hugo said he was glad to see the way the Council had acted in this matter. Their attitude had been a very fair and sympathetic one. Some boards had had great difficulty in their dealings with borough councils. The inspector also said that he had inspected the station, and would strongly recommend the Board to provide extra accommodation for the caretaker. The cost lvould be about £2BO, and arrangements could be niade to borrow by way of special loan and repayment could be made c,ver a number of years. He also referred to the need for indicators in the streets to mark the position of the water plugs. This was a very important- point, and he hoped that the matter would receive attention. Only recently when an. inspection ivas being made he discovered a very important plug near the Box Factory covered with two inches of metal, and it took a pick and shovel to unearth it. This sort of thing was not fair to the brigade and the people. It was an oversight on the part of the Borough employees, but it was no good to the brigade. The Board decided to obtain plans and estimates of the proposed additions to the station, and to submit the pronosal to the Minister for Internal Affairs, and, if approval, was secured, that the work be proceeded with immediately. Captain Nut-tall drew attention to several minor requirements at the staL: on, and it was decided to.'attend to the various matters. Accounts amounting to £270 Ids 9d were passed for pnymeit.
