Mr. James Wilson, touring manager of t.h° Nellie Brainier Company, arrived in Hawera to make arrangements for the forthcoming season at the Opera House on Wednesday. October 8.

To- emphasise his contention that the southern portion of the Dominion was not receiving fair treatment, he showed an Otago Daily Times reporter a letter he had received from a Melbourne firm, which contained the following complaint - . “We are rising our utmost endeavours to secure .shipping on the s.s. Mceraki, which steamer leaves Melbourne this week, although shipping space for the South Island is very difficult to obtain.” The Dunedin merchant pertinently asked why the South Island should be handicapped in this manner. He also referred to the irregular running of the Mceraki on the Melbourne service, and .contrasted it with the-regular running. of the services from Wellington and Auckland to Sydney. An Arctic expedition, largely undertaken bv Oxford University, is about to start on an exploration of North Eastland, a- large island, 90 miles square, which lies to the north-east e.f Soitzbergon (reports Science Service). Two previous attempts have been made to explore it. The first, in. 1573, was by the Norwegian, Nortlenskioid, and was only partially successful. A German expedition in 1912 perished in the attempt. A specially designed seaplane will he used. It will have a closed Calvin, carry a collapsible beat, and be equipped' with floats so designed that landings may be made on the ice. The ’plane will be provisioned for five weeks. The main equipment- of the exoedition will be carried in two vessels, one a 300-ton Norwegian whaler, the other a small Norwegian scaling sloop. The expedition will be led by George Binnev. leader of last year’s Oxford expedition.
