BREACH OF PROMISE.

(by telegraph—press association.) WANGANUI, Sept. 23. At the Supreme Court to-day, Gertrude Fleetwood was awarded £l5O damages against J.. K. Lowe, an engineer on the railways at Auckland, •for a. breach of promise. Defendant, in evidence, admitted • entering an engagement, but. said he very soon realised that he had acted oil an impulse and he wanted plaintiff to take the initiative in breaking it off. ENGINEERING TRADE AWARD. WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. The Arbitration Court, has filed the award for the engineering trade. Hours remain forty-four. a. week and wages are increased one-farthing an hour. Tradesmen now receive 2s 2d an-hour and planers, shapers, slotters and boxers 2s 0M an hour. It is now compulsory that men who worked day •and till after midnight be allowed an eight-hour break or be paid double time for work done on the following day.
