CRY TKI.EGTIAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 23.
Death rode a hard race with the little steamer Rama and lost when she speeded to Port Waitangi at the Chatham Islands recently, securing medical aid for a sick j>assenger. Eight hours after the Rama left Wellington one of the passengers, Jack Dix, became ill. Amateur medical aid was given* but without , avail. Captain Carter, master of the Rama, decided to run for Waitangi. . Extra stokers were put to work and soon the vessel was doing 14 knots instead of 9 knots. Immediately on arrival Dr Ellison was called and he operated. The patient is now on the road to recovery, but -Dr Ellison stated that had the vessel been a few hours later the patient would have been dead.
