(From Our Own Correspondent.)

SPRING FLOWER SHOW. The members of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild have for some ’time past been active in organising a spring show, which eventuated in the Town Hall on Monday. In the majority of classes, competition was keen and the display probably was the best seen locally for a spring show. The cut bloom and flowering ishrub competitions were more favoured than any other as regards excellence and number of exhibits. A feature o'f the display was the very flue table and mantle decorations. The cooking section was patronised and the judge was given some concern in awarding his decision. During the evening ' a short entertainment enlivened proceedings, to which the following contributed : Solo, Mrs. Church; sheantreus, Miss D. Clouston; recitation, Miss Burton ; Highland Fling. Miss J. Hickman; duet, Messrs. Humphries and Lang ton; solo, Miss M. Lyttle; Irish Jig, Miss J. Kirk. A'large number of exhibits were presented to the Guild, and late in the evening an auction conducted by Mr. A. . J. Brennan largely increased the proceeds. The committee of ladies, in charge of the tea rooms were kept busy both afternoon and evening.; The members of the Guild and the joint secretaries, Mesdames R.. J. Campbell and A. Appleby, are to be congratulated on the arrangements made and the success of the function, which resulted in a gross receipt of £63. BALL. The ball held in the Town Hall last week in aid of funds for the proposed new Catholic Church, was a most successful function. Miss K. O’Brien, who was responsible for the organisation in connection therewith, is to be congratulated on the perfection of the arrangements, which left nothing to be desired. Miss O’Brien also personally supervised the decorations throughout, which made a beautiful effect. Music was supplied by Mrs Bradley’s ’ orchestra, the duties of M.C.’s being carried out by Messrs M. Fennell and C. Maindonala. HOSPITAL GROUND IMPROA^E MENT. . An effort is being made by the local Hospital Committee to raise funds to improve the surroundings of the cottage hospital. It has been decided to hold a'street mart on October 6, details of which will be < advertised later. As a preliminary effort the ladies of Oaoriui have already held a social, and another one is being held there this week. The local ladies on Monday ran the teas at the saleyards, and met with considerable success. They are very thankful to those who contributed so freely of eatables on this occasion, and trust that all interested in • the welfare of the institution will render by way of gifts articles that may he disposed of at the proposed mart. The members of the Girls’ Club are busily preparing a concert programme, which will be given in the Town Hall on October 1. The proceeds are to be divided between the Plunket Society and the hospital fund, both very deserving causes. The public will no doubt greet the initial public appearance of the talent hitherto dormant in the Girls’ .Club with a bumper house. SEASIDE SOCIETY. There was a fair attendance of members at the annual meeting of above, Mr T. S. Hickey presiding. The bah . ance-sheet showed that the activities of the Society during the past year had been successful in reducing' its liabilities from £175 4s 2d to £56 14s. ’ In moving the adoption of the balancesheet. the president congratulated members on the success of the year’s working and paid a special tribute to the work of Messrs G. During the past four years voluntary efforts had enabled an expenditure of over £IOOO in beach improvement, which was now largely responsible for the popularity of the beach during the past season. Sinclair; vice-presidents were elected from prominentsupporters and totalled fifty; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. O. Edmonds; auditor, Mr G. Walker. Mr Hickey did not seek re-election as president. Members spoke in eulogistic terms of the able manner in which he had carried out the duties pertaining to the office and of the very good work lie had done for the society. A hearty vote of thanks was carried unanimously. It was resolved to grant the surf club the use of a room as formerly, and to have the name of the club printed prominently on the door.
