Last night the ordinary meeting \S S t’% l n e,e I>"*ent? All. R, S Sage (chair), Mrs. Gilbert, Messrs A. Lees A* L. Campbell, T O. Hobbs, W. Eli t iris tie. Mr A Gray (headmaster) was also present Apologies were received from Messrs Howelf 1 " ■ Hard,ns ’ Len 110,1 and At present’ the roll number is: Commercial senior 11, intermediate 1/, junior 23; agriculture, 8; home science, 11; literary, senior 20, intermediate 20, junior A 28, junior II 4; engineering, senior 12, ‘rumor 17total 171. School resumed on the* loth mst. Mr. B. M. Davis, who had been acting as temporary science master, finished up at the end of last term. 1 should like to record my appreciation, of the work Mr Davis did while on the staff. Mr. H. Hew. aid took up duties at the beginning of the term. Miss Britland. M.A., took up duties at, the beginning of August. During the last" S. Turner gave a very interesting lecture to the agriculture class. ” His subject. “The transport and sale, of dairy produce on the English market ” was splendidly treated. Mr. AVebber. of the hospital farm, has been good enough to make a plan and suggest a scheme for the lay-out of the part of the school boarding house property behind the building. Towards the end of last term a large number of parents spent an interesting .hour or two listening to the debates between teams of students. Mr. O’Dea acted as judge, and altogether the function was most successful. Clement Allen, a member of the engineering section, was successful in passing the public service entrance at the half-yearly examinations. The following commercial students were successful in obtaining Pitman’s Shorthand Certificates *as follows (the examination was supervised by the Rev. H. Curran and Mr. Herbert, who again kindly gave their services)! —Elcmonvary certificate, third class: Muriel Kevs, Aeleeu Brough, Maud Merrie, Doreen Notter, Irene Prime, A\ r illiam Phillip. Theory certificate, second class- Sadie EVans, Flora, Sutherland, Jack Beauchamp, Mavis Burrows, Joyce Grindlod, Maude AATllcocks, Mabel if rough, George Bishop. Eighty words per minute : Mary Quin. .It is. proposed to sow in roots the eastern portion of the land behind the boarding house and to re-sow the lucerne plot. I. should - like also, to have the lefthand side of the entrance drive for experimental grass plots. Prior to laying down the plots, I think it would be a good thing to run a few sheep for a week or two. For this purpose a number of rough hurdles would be required. Also, if the fences round the school ground could be made sheep-proof, some sheep i might be.run. and thus help to keep the hoarding house in meat. With a view to improving the appearance of the lower corridor, I obtained an estimate of the cost of painting the lower part of the walls. I think this should be done in order to help the caretaker in the matter of keeping the walls clean. Mr. Martin has made an excellent job of painting the school badge and motto at the entrance.

GENERAL. The chairman said the numbers had kept up well and he hoped the advent of the new teachers would be a. help to the headmaster and the school. In order to brighten up the corridor the headmaster suggested painting in a bright colour, and it was resolved to accept the estimate which had been given. The headmaster said the' sombre appearance of the corridor had a rather depressing and grubby look, accentuated by the fact that so many children used the walls. He reported that the motto and school badge, “Jnfirmioribus suecurrendo fortior.'’ had been painted on the top of the corridor wall, opposite the entrance door and a light had been placed over it. The effect was very good. The following were appointed representatives on the hoard: Mr. J. Howell for employees and Mr. A. L. Campbell local bodies.

Suggestions and plans were supplied by Mr. TT. J. Webber, of the hospital fftrm, with a view to carrying more 'cows. He considered two more cows could be carried. IMPROVEMENTS SCHEME.

In regard to the entrance to the hostel, the chairman suggested that the path should be laid down on the extreme right so that the rest might be utilised. A tender had been received for a Oft roadway, three chains being required. Mr. Lees favoured making the beautifying of the school grounds the first and greatest consideration.

Considerable discussion took place on the question of expenditure of the money received from the board. 'The chairman and Mr. Campbell were strongly of opinion that a portion should be devoted to the much needed requirements at the hostel and in connection with the very useful and valuable farm work scheme being carried out by Mr. Gray. Mr. Hobbs considered that all work done should be completed in the most effective way possible. Eventually it was resolved to devote £l3O to the improvements at the hostel and grounds and the balance held for work round the school. It was agreed that the farming proposal was necessary for the effective working of the school.

FARM WORE. Messrs. G. W. Wilton and Co. wrote expressing appreciation of the headmaster’s scheme for advance in agricultural science and offering trophies to encourage and foster the work. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the firm for their offer. The matter was left to the chairman and headmaster. FINANCE, The financial statement showed a credit balance in full of £731. HOME SCIENCE. In regard to cookery rooms, a request was made to the department for improved conditions at the school, and unless these are granted it is absolutely impossible to continue. A suggestion is made that the best thing would be the erection of part of the home science wing at the main school, and failing this a grant towards fitting up another room. The department replied that it is proposed to deal with the question by regulations to be issued at an early date. It was agreed that Mr. Hobbs advise the headmaster in. regard to the probable cost. BTOYCLE SHED. With reference to the Suggested bicycle shed, the cost of half of which would be £6l, the department was to consider a grant for a reasonable amount of material, and

suggested the work be done by the boys. The matter was held over till next month. DEPUTATION. Messrs. Dakers and Naim, of Manaia, waited on the board in regard to transport of the children of the Manaia town district. They stressed the need of some scheme which, if successful, would lead them, to give up the idea of a district high school. They were much concerned that at present the children could not get Uack promptly. . Mr. Dakers said he believed a. man could be got to do the work at a reasonable sum, and he agreed to make inquiries so that some scheme could be submitted to the department. He added that if a scheme were available Manaia would be ready and willing to assist Hawera. in every way. The matter of drafting a reply was left to the chairman. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £39 los were passed for payment, and the board rose.
