LAND AND INCOME TAX.
THE ANNUAL BILL
GOVERNMENT FACING CRISIS
(By Telegraph.—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. The Land and Income Tax Bill, which on its introduction was described by the Premier as urgently needed, so as to enable tax demands to be prepared, has been placed at the bottom of today’s order paper. This corroborates the belief that the Government Is facing the most serious crisis of its experience of the present Parliament. The Premier took counsel of his own party last week regarding the incidence of tax remissions, but it is reported that there is still failure to secure complete unanimity. In fact experienced Parliamentarians declare that it the Bill was taken in committee today the land tax proposals would only be carried on the casting vote of the chairman. Further delay in proceeding with the measure may place the Government in a stronger position. Otherwise it is quite probable that when the taxing Bill is considered there will be critical political developments.
