WORKS TO BE UNDERTAKEN. ASSISTANCE FOR SMALL BOROUGHS. '•BY TISLPOHAPIT —PRESS ASSOCIATION * WELLINGTON, Sept, 21. ' At a meeting of the Highways Board it was stated that evidence that local authorities proposed to take advantage of the accruing; to them under the Main Highways Act was provided by the number of proposals for new works forwarded for the board’s approval. As soon as the main highways estimates are passed the board hopes to be able to give local authorities immediate approval to proceed with construction works, towards which.a highways subsidy will be granted. There . were several requests for the declaration of additional highways, as well as for declaring certain sections of main highway as Government roads These were agreed to in a few cases, where the evidence in favour of doing so was particularly strong. The board again considered numerous applications from borough councils for assistance towards the maintenance of streets which are continuations of highways. It approved assistance being granted to a number of smaller boroughs, but it was unable to do so in the cases of larger boroughs. The hoard decided some time ago, for the promotion of efficiency, to set an examination for men engaged in supervising road construction and surfacing works. The scope of the examination was decided upon and the boards is having a syllabus drawn up which will be distributed throughout New Zealand.
