TOWN BOARD ELECTIONS
KAPONGA. The following is the record of votes polled at yesterday’s election by the eight candidates for seats on the Kaponga Town Board: C. E. Betts 90, R. A. Law 90, J. A. Dawson 89, A. Bates 86, D. J. Kefcely 81, A. J. Herbert. 79, R. E. Williams 78, N. C. Davies 68. As the complement of the board is seven members, the first seven named have been declared elected. The return in the leading positions of the four retiring members who contested the election indicated that, despite the difficulties confronting the board during the past six months, its members have rendered an efficient service, .which has commanded the confidence of the electors. Commissioner Betts, who with the exception of one term when he did not accept nomination, has been a member of the board since its inception in 1904, is to be congratulated upon the voting, as is also Commissioner Law, who is now entering upon his third term. Commissioner Dawson was first returned unopposed to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of a member in November last, and Commissioner Bates was returned under similar circumstances in March of this year. This will be the first occasion on which the other members have been elected.
The analysis of the voting is of interest. Out of a total roll number of 235, 42 having freeholders’, rating, or occupiers’ qualifications were unable to record their votes owing to absence. Of the remainder 114 exercised the franchise, this representing approximately 57.9 per cent of the possible voters. In view of the complete nature •of the roll as the result of careful revision, this may be regarded as a satisfactory percentage when compared with the average maintained at local body or general elections. NORMANBY. The result of the polling at Normanby was as follows: A. H. Hills 66, C. Coad 60, J. P. Leydon 47, T. Lloyd 44„,C. J. Preston 41, E. T. Peach 30, J. A. Archbold 25, E. S. Bennett 25, J. H. Forbes 20, A. Hurliman 20. The first five were elected. OPUNAKE.
