(by telegraph—press association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. At the Supreme Court, John Graham and Albert Edward Duncan, two men with bad crime records, were sentenced for breaking, entering and theft of jewellery valued at £305, the former to four years’ hard labour and the latter to two years’ hard labour, concurrent with a current sentence. Leslie Robert White, stated to have been involved iu the disposal of the stolen jewellery, on a charge of theft, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. John Desmond Lauclilan Jobbie, breaking, entering and theft at Pukekohe, was sentenced to three years’ probation. Rupert James Connell, aged 24, tor receiving stolen property. _ was sentenced to two years’ probation conditionally on paying £3O to the probation officer in 12 monthly instalments.

The sketch produced above shows a fast and correct land measurer. Catch hold of the handle with two hands, and turn over and over, keeping one point or leg on the ground each time. The measuring can be done as fast as a man can walk. The contrivance is particularly useful for marking out lands for ploughing.

The need often orises to lift water and other things from one point to another. A barrel sling, contrived in the maimer illustrated, offers a simple means of doing so.
