TENNIS AND CROQUET
HAWERA CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of the Hawera Lawn Tennis and Ci'oquet Club" was held in the Borough Council Chambers last night, when Mr J. Bayley presided over an attendance of 14 members. ANNUAL REPORT.
The annual report was as follows: The past year proved quite a successful one on the whole, and members will notice from the balance-sheet that the substantal sum of £44 13s has been placed to the accumulated fund account. In addition £lB was spent on the horse and harness and equipment, £2l on the present tool shed, and £8 10s for a new mower. The lawns have received constant and expert attention during the winter, and should be in much better order next season than last. It is to be regretted that we have lost or are losing several of our most prominent members, ‘and it will be necessary for others to come forward and assist in the management of affairs. The tennis section will be without the aid of five of their top players (men) of 10 months ago, and the two leading croquet players will also be absent. No tennis tournaments were played last year, which was much, to be regretted. At the close of the season the top players on the ladder were Miss R. Blake and Mr E. M. Hodder. Mrs Bennett won the croquet championship, with Mrs Morris runner- • up, while Mrs Bennett retained her position as top of the ladder. Several inter-club matches were arranged, but were all cancelled on account ofV the weather. Buttons matches between A and B players took place almost each week. A team of six nlayers, including Mesdames Bennett" Morris, J. Campbell, Suisted, Dowling and Miss Power ; won the association rose bowl at the New Plymouth tournament in February for the second time.— Adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow: President, Mr J. Bayley; vice-presidents, Mrs Suisted and Miss Caplen; secretary and treasHobin; committee, Mesdames Dowling and Bilton, Miss Burgess, and Messrs S. Studholm and R. A. Douglas; grounds committee. Mrs Dowling and Mr R. A. Douglas; delegate to association, Mr E. G. Foden; tennis match committee, Mr S. Studholm, the secretary, and Miss Wills; tea committee Mesdames Bilton and Suisted, and Misses Sutton, Joll, Blake and C. Huggins; auditor, Mr R. I. McGregor. The matter of the opening day was left to the grounds committee. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr E. M. Hodder for the manner in which he had carried out his work on the grounds committee'
Mr Hodder, in replying, said that in three or four: weeks the lawns would be in first-class order, due to the attention given to them in the late winter. From the end of June onwards was the most critical time as far as the condition of a lawn - was concerned, and there-was very little hope of getting a decent turf until Christmas if attention were not given during the late winter and early spring. ■ , T An honorarium of £lO 10s was voted i i for past services, and the matter of making the presentation on opening day was left with a sub-committee consisting of Miss Burkoss and Messrs J. Bavley and J. M. Hobin.
Ihe meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.. • *
