SMUGGLED OPIUM
QUANTITY WORTH £IOOO SEIZED. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION ) WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. A man named Chevne, a member of the crew of the steamer Sussex, was a 1 rested on the wharf with four tins oI opium on him, and a search of his cabin revealed 48 more tins of opium valued at £IOOO, and. said to be the largest haul made in New Zealand. As the Sussex has- already visited Auckland, it is believed that some of the drug has probably been disposed of there.
CHARGE AGAINST AH PIN. WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Ah Pm, carpenter on the steamer Sussex, was charged with smuggling in opium, and was remanded for a week. Bail was opposed, and it is understood the case will be taken to the Supreme Court.
