(HONOLULU CONFERENCE.
IMPORTANT MATTERS DISCUSSED
(by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) . . AUCKLAND, Sept. 15. Speaking of a recent conference at Honolulu, one of the New Zealand representatives, Mr. G. M. Thomson, who returned by the Makura., said he thought the conference had been successful and useful.
•Anijong the subjects discussed of great lihportahce to this- country was thp -preseryation .of whales, seals and o’tKer ' fur'-bea ring animals in the Pacific. This he thought- would be arranged eventually by international agreement. A closer study of ocean currents as they affected the distribution of food fish was likely to eventuate as the result of a discussion, and would be of use to New Zealand.
The quarantine section discussed parasites to cope with insect pests, but it seemed to him that New Zealand wa.s regarded as fairly clear so far as fruit diseases were concerned, and that there was plenty of scope in New Zea- ' fe r apples. It /Was remarked that the supervision of exported apples at Auckland was scarcely severe enough. If the fruit was properly examined at this end there was room for a much bigger trade in apples from New Zealand than at present. i had definite- information that the toot and mouth disease in California originated in garbage, from an' army transport being fed to.pigs. The Hawaiian authorities had decided to preserve a strict quarantine for a further period.
