OLD WAIHI REDOUBT.

A VALUABLE PHOTOGRAPH

CRICKET REMINISCENCES

We have been sholvn by Mr T. Lloyd; Inaha, an enlarged photo of the Waihi Redoubt, taken in 1874. It was built in 1868, and wag no doubt constructed with due regard to possible attacks by Titokowaru’s forces. The redoubt and other buildings were protected by strong palisading, with a loophole tower at one corner, where during the day a splendid view of the surrounding country could he obtained from the top. It does seem a pity that. no vestige of such an important British stronghold remains; as evidence of the strenuous ’sixties; even the ground where the redoubt stood has been so broken up with the nlough and other causes that it would now be difficult- to find the site. The Armed Constabulary who occupied Waihi Redoubt were comprised of men from all stations in life, and amongst them were to be found many fine cricketers. It was there that all important matches were played 50 years ago; Fred and, George Bayly, Fred Riddiford, Thos. Mason. Beresford and others who represented the civilians of Hawera, wielded the willow r to some purpose at that historical spot in the ddvs .when the City of the Rains was in the making. Mr Lloyd is fortunate to possess such a valuable reminder of the struggles between the pakeha. and Maori.
