American observers express certainty that the Davis Cup will remain in the United States, but the question has how arisen whether Australia will be able, to repeat.last year’s showing. Patterson has beaten Richards before, but he is not the same Richards to-day. He has been playing brilliantly and is in his best form, while Patterson "has recently . been decidedly below par. Wood, too. is not playing as well as he was a month ago. It is generally held that Australia cannot expect to Win anv of the singles, but they have decidedlv more than an even chance of wining the doubles if they can return +o ; the form shown in the match with Griffin and Johnston this year or against Tilden and Richards' in the Davis Cup matches in 1922.
