TRAFFIC THROUGH TOLL.

TALLY POL 16 YEARS. INCREASE IN MOTOR TRAFFIC. The Hawera County Council at. its meeting on Saturday decided to place on record its appreciation of the services being rendered by Mr T. Lloyd, who has held the position of collector at the toll-gate on the South road since its inception on February 8, 1908. As -his reports, show, Mr Lloyd is a most •painstaking official, and has gone to no end of trouble to keep an accurate tally of all the traffic which passes •■through the gate. As the county clerk pointed out,, the Council, through Mr 'Lloyd's'efforts, is possessed of information’ which, .lie felt sure, no other county could boast of. Since the erection of the toll-gate in 1908, Air Llovd had compiled his' returns, a glance-at which would show the exact 'time-and manner of the increase in the . volume of motor traffic ■in this part of the country. Incidentally the figures would show the heavy decline in the number of horse-drawn vehicles. . The figures for the periods 1923-24. together with those of 1908-09 in parentheses, are as' follows: Horsemen and loose horses, .1300 (6929); one-horse light vehicles, 1704 (12.58.1);• two-horse Fglit vehicles, 6 (626); push bicycles, 1861 (2979); waggons, carts and drays, etc. 406 (2632); motor cars, 11,270 •(145) ; motor lorries. 2292-(nil) ; motor ’busses and charabancs, 564 (nil); motor cycles, 2342 (nil); motor cycles with chairs. 597 (nil); cattle, 5549 (7969); sheep. 11,321 (15,492); pigs dr' veil, nil (93). The total for the past 16 years is as follows: Horsemen and loose horses, 47.192; one-horse light vehicles, 95,028; two-horse light vehicles, 2200: waggons, carts, drays, etc., .27,682; bicycles, 34.785; cattle. 357,094; sheep, 253.997; pigs driven, 156; motor ears, 113,326; motor lorries. 17,955; motor ’busses, 4634; motor cycles, 26,735; motor cycles with side chairs, 7156.
