VANCOUVER,, Sept, 5. The Sultana diamond, weighing 183 carats, and said to be the fourth largest in the world, , has been purchased for an American syndicate. Mr. Joseph Stahlin made the announcement torday on the arrival !of the new French, steamship Segrasse. Mr, _ Stahlin, refused to- name the syndicate or make known the price, but he declared the diamond would be shipped here, under bond, within a fortnight. The stone was purchased from Mulai Hafid after a trans-oceanie across desert race with the representatives of another American syndicate which was seeking it. Mr. Stahlin related that after the purchase was consummated at the exSultan’s home- in the interior . of Morocco, a gem expert, of Tangiers, had appraised the stone at twice the sum he paid for it.
Little is known of the diamond’s history, except that Murai Hafid put it on the market- about four years ago, offering it for sale in various old world capitals.
