TONGARIRO RAILWAY.
MR HILEY TO REPORT FOR GLASGOW FIRM.
AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. Advice has been received in Auekland that Mr E. H. Hiley, formerly general manager of ; New Zealand Railways, will sail from London on September 14 to report on'the Tongariro railway proposition on behalf of Messrs Gammell, Laird and Company, Limited a shipbuilders and general engineers, Glasgow. Mr Hiley will travel by the Ormonde to Australia. 1 Negotiations by the Tongariro TimCompany for the. construction of the line, which will run from Kakahi on the Main Trunk railway to Taupo, have keen in proress for many years. Just before the war everything was in tram for completing the purchase of timber on native lands and undertaking the construction of the line. Owing to the war it was impossible for the company to go on with the project, and various extensions of time were made. Last year a Bill was passed by larhament authorising a modification oi the conditions under which the line had to be built. It was pointed out r a^ja * R ti aa dard line such as was stipulated in the existing legislation would cost over £1,000,000, and to assist the company concessions in regard to curves and grades were allowed. The company negotiated with Sir William Armstrong. Whiteworth and' Companv to build the line, and Sir Edward Cornwell paid a visit to New Zealand this year m connection with the proposal. The arrangements with Armstrong, Whitworth and Comoany have now fallen through.
