Proposals for the establishment of a fortnightly fast mail passenger and chilled meat steamer sendee between England and Australia are now being considered by the Federal Government. The total capital for such a scheme wo_uld be LI ,000,000. It is proposed to build six vessels of 20,000 tons gross at an estimated cost of £'8,000,000 to be constructed in Britain as an inaugural fleet to steam twenty knots, and additional steamers for a weekly service to steam twenty-two knots at sea, and if then practicable, twenty-four knots. They will carry four hundred first, three hundred second and fifteen hundred third-class passengers. The proposals involve the payment of a substantial subsidy by the Commonwealth Government.
